Most Expensive

The first ever “multiprizer” on The Price is Right, where a contestant can win three prizes with a single decision.

Three prizes are shown, each labeled #1, #2, and #3. All the contestant has to do is pick out which is most expensive, and they win all three prizes.

Most Expensive is one of TPIR’s most frequently played games as a quick way to give the contestant a fish stew of assorted prizes. On TPIR’s first season it served as one of the three original “quick” games along with Double Prices and Clock Game. Most Expensive has been played more times than any other pricing game except Double Prices.

A contestant excitedly hugs the host during a game of 'Most Expensive', with three prize displays labeled 1, 2, and 3 in the background.

Bob explains to Tom that he has a chance to win not one, not two, but THREE prizes…

A sewing machine, a refrigerator/freezer, and a catamaran!

All Tom has to do is pick the most expensive prize.

Is it number 1, the sewing machine…

…number 2, the refrigerator/freezer….

…or number 3, the catamaran?

Tom says number 3, and number 3 is lit up to signify his choice. Let’s see if he’s right!

Number 1, the sewing machine, is only $429…

…and number 2, the refrigerator/freezer, is $514. If the catamaran is more than $514, Tom’s won everything on stage.

Awww! Turns out number 3 was the least expensive.

TPIR made some major set upgrades when preparing to expand to an hour in 1975, and those upgrades included Most Expensive. Finally, no more sharing sets with Five Price Tags.

Nancy has chosen the encyclopedia set; if you look closely you can see number 2 is lit up.

On occasion, Most Expensive is played using all three doors. It’s a romantic trip to Niagara Falls…

…a fabulous trip to Kauai…

…and an exciting trip to Cancun!

S20, Oct 15 1991

The “shoe podiums” were replaced in the mid-80s with “Victorian podiums”. Excited contestant Melanie has chosen number 3, the motorcycle…

By 2010, the game was on its fourth set. Rumor has it that former announcer Rich Fields ended up with the decommissioned pink and blue ones.

S42, Jan 8 2014

Announcer George Gray began helping out with prize modeling duties for number 3.

After winning, Kalyn is so excited to run towards George and hug him, she trips on the game’s logo…

…and barrels into George, knocking him into the TV she just won!

S43, Jan 5 2015

George CANNOT catch a break in this game. He slipped and fell off the treadmill he was describing!

S51, Feb 24 2023

Three years after Kalyn’s “trip”, the carpet was streamlined a bit.

When TPIR moved to Haven Studios in Glendale, tighter space meant a few of the backdrops had to be downsized. The gameplay, of course, remains tight as ever.
