Hi Lo

The second ever game on The Price is Right to use grocery products, after Grocery Game.

Six products are shown, along with a board with three slots for “Hi” prices and three slots for “Lo” prices. The contestant needs to pick the three highest-priced products that belong in the “Hi” row. If they can do that, they’ll win a larger bonus prize!

Hi Lo isn’t the most frequently played game, but it’s easy to understand and relatively quick. It’s a solid test of “popular pricing” skills most people use every day.

A contestant enthusiastically waves while approaching the pricing game set on 'The Price is Right', featuring a display of grocery products labeled 'Hi' and 'Lo' with visible prices.

Leonard, a landscaper, prepares to play Hi Lo! For over 35 years, Hi Lo was wheeled out by the models, giving the game a unique reveal.

Six grocery products on the table–the three highest priced belong in the “Hi” row, the three lowest in the “Lo” row. If Leonard can correctly say which goes where, he’ll win…

…a riding lawnmower and outdoor patio furniture! Leonard the landscaper is thrilled about that!

Here’s a closer look at the six items, ranging from dog food, to fabric finish, to a six-pack of 70’s Fanta Root Beer!

Leonard must pick out three items that belong in the “Hi” row. His first choice is antacid, which was revealed to be $1.35. Probably a safe choice for the “Hi” row in 1973!

His next choice is the dog food, which was $1.19. Bob puts both the cards in the “Hi” row to signify Leonard’s choices.

His third choice, the root beer, is only 89 cents. Hopefully the least expensive of the “Hi” row!

The other three products have to be less than 89¢ for Leonard to win. Bob reveals the cheese first…

…only 53¢, so that’s safe. How about the ice cream?

Just BARELY under, but that’s enough! If the fabric finish is under 89¢, Leonard’s a winner…

It is! Leonard’s driving off in that lawn mower!

Bob slots the card in the reveal to seal the deal!

The first time Hi Lo was played, it had slightly different rules. The contestant picked a product, Bob revealed the price, and the contestant decided whether it belonged in the “Hi” or “Lo” row. This ruleset was anticlimactic and the rules were quickly changed to “pick the three Hi products”.

By Season 6, the brown and orange set had been swapped for a sleeker red, white, and clear one.

These price tags really pop against the clear plexiglass!

And Norman’s won a camper!

In a memorable episode, Janice and Holly pretended to be drunk and hid in the bedroom group during the game.

In Season 19, the set got a blue makeover. Scot, a self-proclaimed Loyal Friend and True, rattles off the prices for each item as soon as he sees them!

“Dolla ninety nine.” “What’d you say?” asks Bob? “Dolla ninety nine!”, repeats Scot.

Needless to say, he won!

When Scot was eliminated at the Big Wheel, Bob congratulated Scot for “making the Hi Lo game as much fun as it has ever been!”

Helen is a box of Pop-Tarts away from winning a new dining room. She needs them to be under $3.99. Out of curiosity, Drew tears into the box…

…and has Helen hold a Pop-Tart for luck before revealing the price…

…Pop-Tarts are only $2.79!

Drew and Helen enjoy a victory feast of stale Pop-Tarts!

These days Hi Lo usually foregoes being wheeled out by the models in favor of a more traditional reveal. But sometimes they play with the staging. Here it is in front of the prize: a trip to Belize!

Robert thinks the crowd is yelling “POPSICLES” for his final “Hi” choice, but he checks with his wife to make sure…

“PASTA SAUCE!” Robert’s glad he double-checked!

Robert’s selection of “PASTA SAUCE” was $6.49, was avoiding the popsicles the right choice?

It sure was!

Robert’s going to Sweden! Good thing he double checked!
